I have now got a genetic algorithm working on my grammer-learner. It's got through about ten generations of rules so far. Training it is dull work for one person; I hope to learn how to do web interfaces and get a whole bunch of people working on it eventually...

But anyway, look at some of the silliness it's come up with by now:

  • donkey wanker
  • me have monkey
  • monkey pirate I look brown
  • got some chicken
  • use elvis
  • hello elvis
  • do me

I'm going to start using 'donkey wanker' as an insult.    8^)

It's already got a better grasp of English grammar than most livejournal users.

I suppose I could train it over livejournal by using the voting feature... but do you have to be a paid member to do that?

It's so worth five bucks at this exchange rate.

PS. Donkey wanker!

You do realise that mentioning the exchange rate might be enough to cause vulnerable exam-stressed Americans all over livejournal to finally have that nervous breakdown, right, monkey pirate?

Alex: the GA thing is pretty cool. What are you using for your fitness critera? Oh, and before I forget my sacred pedant mission--grammar doesn't have any e's in it.

I don't have a fitness critirion per se; I just generate pairs of sentences and let people choose the one that seems more grammatical. Hence needing a web interface and a group of users.

However, I do have a few shortcuts; zero-word sentences get downvoted, as do infinitely recursing ones. I've also just added one-word sentence downvoting, and am planning to put in something to punish sentences that keep popping up with no variation.

Thanks for the spellcheck. I don't know what I was thinking. Grammer? Ouch. Grammar. Grammar grammar grammar grammar grammar.
