But does anybody know how one makes an actual font, rather than a collection of vector graphics files? I'm just curious; I don't really have the patience for font design.

I use Font Lab's TypeTool 2, preparing the outlines in Illustrator first. You can see my work here - the ones marked new are done in FontLab (the others are much older and done in Fontographer). If you can get the vector files to me in a form Illustrator understands, and buy me a pint or two, I can make the fonts for you.
