I recently saw this series of messages on the FreecycleEdinburgh mailing list. They made me giggle:

Subject: Offer: Ubuntu Linux (Causewayside)

Someone has randomly sent our office a copy of this Linux variant.

"Ubuntu" is an ancient African word, meaning "humanity to others". Ubuntu also means "I am what I am because of who we all are". The Ubuntu Linux distribution brings the spirit of Ubuntu to the software world.

Aside from the warm glow I feel at appreciating our shared humanity, this is utterly useless to us. I'll give it to anyone who wants to come and get it. This is almost certainly acceptable within the terms of the license as long as I also give you a hug.

It turns out we have lots of these. This not only means that I needn't have broken Dave's heart, but also that I can now conduct a more careful experiment.

None of this should be taken as a guarantee that a hug will be provided.
It's that kind of low-level uncertainty that helps keep romance alive.
