I've been playing with Google Earth. It's fun. One of the things I've been doing is to just set it slowly spinning, and then try to figure out what I'm passing over. This is unexpectedly difficult, especially as north doesn't remain upwards while it's rotating. This gave me the idea: here are a bunch of screenshots, with distinguishing features (including compass) removed. Can you tell me where they are? (Depending on the response, this may be one in a series.)

Start out pretty easy.

Now an interesting view of some familiar shapes.

This should be easy enough.

More tricky. Hint: it's a moderately famous place.

This one's surprisingly tricky, given its scale. You may kick yourselves.

Made quite a bit harder by a rotated north.

A couple of my readers should find this one pretty easy.

And reasonably easy to finish.

Erm... I mean, all part of the fun, isn't it?
Most of them are pretty large scale. Except #3 & 4.

Bingo.
> No idea
Rather evil; it's the Bering sea. Alaska at the top, Russia at the bottom.
> Cornwall, Wales, Ireland
Indeed
> San Fransisco Strait
Nope! Gibraltar.
> Gulf of Aden
Yes, and most of the Red Sea.
> I guess Newfoundland
Miles off. It's Australia (Queensland) and Papua New Guinea.
> Baija California
Yes.
> Thailand, Malaysia, specifically the Khota Barau peninsualr.
Correct.
You may now kick yourself. 8^)

The Bering sea, between Alaska (top of image) and Russia (bottom). But... I thought they were opposite sides of the map! 8^)

Indeed

Gibraltar. The 'chin' of Spain to the left, the pointy bit of Morocco to the right.
> ?
This one is evil. It makes my giggle. It's the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. North points right. The horn of Africa (i.e. Somalia) is the bit poking down at the left of the image.
> Papua New Guinea/Australia
Well done! Not the easiest!
> Gulf of California
Exactly.

Thailand, Vietnam, etc. The South China Sea is to the right.

I think you mean the Bering Straight. In any case, if you mean the tiny bit of water seperating Alaska from Russia, you're correct.
100% on all the others. Somebody give that man a cookie.

Bering Straits - Atlantic to the right.
Cornwall, Bristol Channel, Wales, Ireland in top right.
Straits of Gibraltar, Mediterranean at the top.
Red Sea in middle, Gulf of Aden at left and Horn of Africa at extreme left.
Australia on left, New Guinea on right
Baja California
The pensinsula in the middle is Cambodia, South China Sea.
... do I get a biscuit? Or jsut the cheerful sense of knowing that I've wasted far too much time playing "hunt the aircraft carrier" and other such things?

Well... virtual biscuit, anyway: O

The ones I did get were
1. Greenland
3. England/Ireland
4. Gibraltar
7. California
8. Thailand/Malaysia/Cambodia
I didn't have a clue about any of the others.
