Went walking yesterday, along the Union Canal from Viewforth. Saw the aquaduct over the Water of Leith, which is gorgeous, and noticed that you can now walk all the way from there to Leith. (In fact, IIRC you can walk all the way from Balerno)1. Am planning to do Viewforth -> Slateford -> Leith on Saturday. This time, however, I just continued on along the canal. It is a rather pretty path, and has benefited from some TLC as part of the Millenium conservation thingummy projects. Walked to Wester Hailes, and should be more careful in future as I was in serious danger of falling off The Edge Of The World. Because as any Edinburger knows, beyond the Edinburgh bypass there is only void. 8^)
Managed to jog a substantial part of the way back. Exercise is good.
On an interesting note, was reading an article today about solitons, which I don't by any stretch of the imagination understand, but I did discover that they were first observed... where? The Union Canal! Must walk to the Scott Russell aqueduct next time I walk the canal...
[1] Ooh look, the path's even got its own wiki page!

I've been running about once a week down the canal and water of leith; the paths beside the water of leith just after the viaduct you mentioned, going in the out of town direction, I think are quite nice, in fact nicer than the bit further out that is designated as a cycle route. I wonder what it's like in the other direction.

Shame on me- I had completely forgotten about John Scott Russell and his documenting the properties of solitons.
Most Scotts have probably never heard of James Clerk Maxwell ether. We should be naming more than canal bridges (and EU buildings) in his honour!

- Well, only for a bit, and then there are pretty places, e.g. Linlithgow, or all the bits in East Lothian. But there is the odd bit in between. I would've been more worried about W.Hailes myself! (eep!)

Wester Hailes was deceptively nice-looking. Grassy, and sunny. With swans.

It goes past the Modern Art Gallery and through the Dene, which is beautiful. You also get to see allotments, cemeteries, industrial ruin, jakie ridden parks, dodgy industrial estates, urban renovation, lots of squirrels and curiously redundant bridges.
The route I took was Wester Hailes -> Slateford -> Leith.
I didn't actually realize that that bridge was an aquaduct until I crossed it. ^^;
