Everybody knows Raymond Briggs as the much-loved author/illustrator of The Snowman and Father Christmas. But did you know he also wrote a book about a kindly old couple, Jim and Hilda Bloggs, attempting to deal with the aftermath of a nuclear attack? And a book called "The Tin-Pot Foreign General and the Old Iron Woman" about... well, you work it out.   8^)

Also: No idea what sort of crap to get your family and friends for christmas?

Yes, once again, I should be working.   8^P

I remember finding When the Wind Blows in a pile of children's books when I was little. I was slightly disturbed, to say the least.

When the Wind Blows was quite well-known at the time, and like The Snowman it was animated. Unlike The Snowman, it wasn't very life-affirming.

Indeed, it scores well enough to be an IMDB top-250 film, but doesn't make the chart because it only has 700-odd votes. The threshold is 1300. Almost worth registering.

I've read the Tin-Pot Foreign General and the Old Iron Woman. I really laughed at the page that depicted Maggie with machine guns firing out of her... breasts.

Um.

When the Wind Blows - 'Tis awesome, not as bowel-emptyingly scary and depressing as Threads, however.

Re: The Snowman

Dear James,

I find your statement suspect, given that the name "James" did not even appear in the book — according to wikipedia, that name was inserted into the film by one of the animators, whose son was named James.
