Next trimester I have to do a group programming project with three other people. It should be manageable. The only thing is, none of us can think of any ideas as to what to program!

I was thinking of some sort of client-server application; a program runs on your computer, which connects over the internet to some server in order to do something. Something like a chat program, although that's been done to death, and the world really doesn't need another one!

Maybe an online version of a board game? Catan's been done pretty thoroughly... maybe something a little more obscure?

What language do you have to use?

What technologies do you have to implement? GUI? Networking? File access?

How competent is the team?

How much time do you have?

oh, and the coolest multi user online game I can think of to implement is mentsl poker (i.e. poker without a dealer).

> What language do you have to use?

Any, but probably either Java or C# would be best.

> What technologies do you have to implement? GUI? Networking? File access?

Whatever is appropriate.

> How competent is the team?

Pretty solid. My level or thereabouts.

> How much time do you have?

A few months. (The group project is only one of four modules, though, so quarter that.)

Mental poker looks interesting. Cryptography scares me slightly, though.

If you can get away with J2ME, how about a client-server app from the phone? Either something using localisation or something that's traditionally phone-browser based but sucks that way.

I know how to create a client J2ME app, but I have no idea how you implement a server. What technology would you need?

How about a MUD-like representation of the city of Edinburgh, with a rich system for describing and changing objects?
