Not sure exactly what a fandom is, but here's a list of ten clues which each relate to a film, series, book, etc. which I like. What's what?

Edit: I shall now reveal the anwsers! Feel free to throw things at me.

  1. Its creator(s) derive much of [his/their] humour from forcing a handful of characters together who just can't stand each other. (Red Dwarf; guessed by [livejournal.com profile] deralte, random-bloke-in-pub and [livejournal.com profile] digitalraven)
  2. According to an old joke, the main character has three ears. (Star Trek; guessed by [livejournal.com profile] dsky, [livejournal.com profile] digitalraven and [livejournal.com profile] original_aj)
  3. Apparent references to marijuana use and... erm... sexually ambiguous relationships are actually just the result of cultural shifts since this work was created. (The Lord of the Rings; guessed by [livejournal.com profile] dsky, [livejournal.com profile] figg, [livejournal.com profile] brucec and [livejournal.com profile] digitalraven)
  4. The title character is actually a different person in each installment, but with the same name. (The Legend of Zelda games; guessed by [livejournal.com profile] oddity_uk)
  5. According to this work, it is universally possible to order a gin and tonic. (The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series of books; guessed by [livejournal.com profile] yodathedark, [livejournal.com profile] dsky, [livejournal.com profile] figg, [livejournal.com profile] deralte, [livejournal.com profile] digitalraven and [livejournal.com profile] original_aj)
  6. Entities which are harmless, obedient, and self-preserving. In that order. (Isaac Asimov's Robot Novels; guessed by [livejournal.com profile] dsky, [livejournal.com profile] figg, [livejournal.com profile] deralte, [livejournal.com profile] galaxy_girl00, [livejournal.com profile] digitalraven and [livejournal.com profile] original_aj)
  7. One's vocalisations of distress, emitted into a vacuum, will be impossible to detect. (Alien; guessed by [livejournal.com profile] dsky, [livejournal.com profile] figg, [livejournal.com profile] oddity_uk, [livejournal.com profile] galaxy_girl00, [livejournal.com profile] deralte, [livejournal.com profile] digitalraven and [livejournal.com profile] original_aj)
  8. Should one 100,000,000,000-km-tall being wish to wed another, the title object would probably make a good token of his intent.   8^)   (Ringworld; guessed by [livejournal.com profile] dsky, [livejournal.com profile] figg, [livejournal.com profile] deralte, [livejournal.com profile] digitalraven and [livejournal.com profile] original_aj)
  9. The main character is named after a Greek princess, but (partially) modelled on a Japanese one. (Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind; guessed by nobody [oops!])
  10. Origami causes angst! — but only in the Director's Cut. (Blade Runner; guessed by [livejournal.com profile] dsky, [livejournal.com profile] figg, [livejournal.com profile] galaxy_girl00, [livejournal.com profile] digitalraven and [livejournal.com profile] original_aj)

I like clue 8. Clue 8 is on crack.

1. Um... every comedy series ever?
2. I reckon it's probably Kirk with the "Frontier" and therefore Star Trek.
3. The Lord of the Rings.
4. I'm pretty certain that a Stephen Baxter book does this with one of his series of books but I'm equally certain he's not the title character and so will have to plead ignorance.
5. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
6. Asimov's robot stories.
7. Alien.
8. I love this clue, but I've no idea. I'm thinking astronomical sized rings so uh... Halo? I seem to recall a series of books called Ringworld or something like that.
9. No idea.
10. Blade Runner

Yup! By Larry Niven. Good books.

4. Doctor Who (though Blackadder fits that description oddly enough)
5. Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy
6. Asimov's Robot verse
8. Ringworld?
9. Xena?

Two is really bothering me... mostly cause I have no idea *L*

Bingo on 1, 5, 6 and 8.

> 4. Doctor Who

Arguably, he's the same person throughout. (Different actor, though).

> (though Blackadder fits that description oddly enough)

Good point. Not what I was thinking of, but good nonetheless.   8^)

> 9. Xena

No, but interesting guess. 9's probably the hardest one, but it is gettable.

> Two is really bothering me... mostly cause I have no idea

If you've not heard the joke, you probably won't get it. It's a really awful joke, but I'll share it with you after everybody's guessed.

3. Star Trek or maybe, The Prisoner (or am I just remembering thinking that the creators were smoking crack when they wrote that show?;))
4. The Crow? Kung Fu (The Legend Continues)?
7. Alien

Yes please (about the joke). It's going to bother me, I can tell.

Regarding 1, I can't think of another science fiction/fantasy series that consistently has everyone on the cast hating each other, though that was close to the first season of Farscape. Red Dwarf's seems obvious enough to me.

Got number 7!

> 3. Star Trek or maybe, The Prisoner (or am I just remembering thinking that the creators were smoking crack when they wrote that show?;))

Crack was definitely smoked on The Prisoner. Or maybe that's just the influence of Portmeirion.

Niether of those, though.

> 4. The Crow? Kung Fu (The Legend Continues)?

More interesting guesses. Interesting, but not what I was thinking of.   8^)

And regarding the joke, I'll just put you out of your misery now:

Q: "How many ears does Captain Kirk have?"
A: "Three: a right ear, a left ear, and a final front ear!"

ROFL, I'm sure.   8^]

Whoah! Most of these were gotten rather quickly! Should have been more evil.

Tiny hint: a couple of people have complained that #1 is too generic. To which I say: there's another, more specific (albeit rather obscure), clue in there...

Oh, and a fandom is technically the fan-made community devoted to whichever series/books/movie etc, usually online though they existed in zines long before the word 'fandom' was actually coined. Many people, including me, tend to use fandom as a word meaning any work they're sufficiently interested in to do any of the following - read/watch the whole series/read fanfic/write fanfic/make icons/read theories online/debate online/buy merchandise etc.

In order:
Red Dwarf
Star Trek
LotR
?
H2G2
Asimov's robots
Alien
Ringworld
?
Blade Runner

What are the two I didn't get?

From: [identity profile] original-aj.livejournal.com

1 - No idea
2 - Star Trek, with it's final front ear!
3 - No idea
4 - No idea
5 - Hitchiker's Guide
6 - Asimov's Robot series (the three laws)
7 - Alien (In space no-one can hear you scream)
8 - Ringworld, possibly?
9 - No idea again.
10 - Bladerunner, of course! But it was in the original film too, just more subtly.
