Products advertised "for men only". How insecure about your masculinity do you have to be to buy a product on the strength of that? And there are now far too many...

  • "Just For Men" hair colouring — probably the first to wander into this territory.
  • Yorkie bars
  • That shampoo ad on TV recently... I forget which
  • McCoy's crisps
  • Burger King
  • What have I missed?

Oh, and answers to the fandom meme are now shown. Congrats to [livejournal.com profile] digitalraven for getting the most right.

Pepsi Max did it first. I seem to remember "X-treeem" adverts, with skydiving and stuff.

'Course, it tastes like crap.

L'Oreal have started advertising a "for men" shampoo on TV, with the tagline "you're worth it too", which made me laugh. It makes sense sometimes though: I know I don't feel entirely comfortable browsing the cosmetics shelves in shops, while the "for men" products are put on the appropriate shelves.

Men's products

Bruce is absolutely right. I want to buy products that I know where made especially for me and not some dainty feminine product.

Re: Men's products

No, I'm completely wrong - if that's what you thought I was saying :)
I think the whole "for men" thing is silly. Instead of marketing it specifically for men, just make it generic and people will buy it. For example, everyone buys E45 because it doesn't come in pink tubs or anything, while I suspect most men would think twice about buying Revlon products because they market their products specifically at women (check their homepage to see what I mean). I, however, have no problem buying Revlon or Nivia or any of those products simply because I'm allergic to E45 and I find that the other products work much better.

There's nothing wrong with targetting a section of the populace — what annoys me is the "men ONLY" attitude, which I find pathetic.
