Questions from [livejournal.com profile] batswing:

  1. To what extent do you identify with your nickname (spud), and how do you think this and your other nicknames help to form your identity?

Ooh... good question. I really started to use spud as a nickname when I needed a handle for IRC/USENET. More than a nickname, it became an entire persona I used to socialise online. Hiding my face allowed me to come out of my shell a lot more than I did in real life. (To mix a metaphor slightly.) What can I say? I was a shy child.

On coming to university I realised that there were entire groups of people who seemed keen on being friends with me. (Somewhat of a rarity up 'til then.) But practically all my social skills revolved around acting the root vegetable, and so at times it just felt natural to give my name as 'spud' or 'potato'. I used it as an affectation, basically, that I put on when I felt 'on display' and didn't know what else to do.

Nowadays I hardly ever use the whole potato act as a 'front'; I tend rather to just flick it on whenever potato products are being consumed. Because I am, at heart, incredibly silly.   8^)

So, to what extent do I identify with it? More than is healthy, I'd warrant! And what has it contributed to my identity? Well, it helped form my social identity, so it'll always be important to me.

  2. Chips - Ketchup or bbq sauce?

    Fiend!
You shall never see me canabilise my fellow vegetables! Never I say!
(And if I did, it would certainly not be in Edinburgh's inimitable fashion: with salt & brown chippy sauce.)

  3. In what ways do you think you'd be a different person if you'd grown up in just one country/county?

Oh, goodness knows. I'd like to think that I'd still have rebelled against the culture and belief-systems of the place in which I was raised, and have ended up much as I am today. However, it is a possibility that I am just the product of my upbringing, and I would be totally different had I grown up in different circumstances. It perturbs me, to be honest.

  4. What do you regret?

Acquiring a taste for Hong-Kong-style noodles after I'd already left that country...

  5. Describe the happiest moment in your life to date.

I would, but it would be cloyingly cutesy.

Questions from [livejournal.com profile] kisin:

  1. What's with the potato fetish?

In addition to what's written above, I reckon I should add: my sister once compared my appearance to that of Mr. Potato Head. I needed an IRC handle, and so I used that...

  2. Which is your prefered programing language and why?

Python, because it's concise, natural and flexible. There are a few flaws, but I can't see much better out there.

  3. Fight or flight, which would you take?

On my own? Flight. In protection of another? Fight.
Luckily this is all theoretical; I've never been in a truly dangerous situation in my life. (Although I've walked into one or two that could have been.)

  4. Where do you see your self in 5 years?

    Not a clue. Next question?

  5. Beer, ale, Bier or cider or spirit?

Ale please! Thanks for the offer!   8^>
I also like a good whisky from time to time.

> Whole new bits of you emerge...

Excuse me?!   8^S
Anyway:

1. You've come out of your shell a lot recently. Do you ascribe this to [livejournal.com profile] kisin, or something else in your life?
2. Favourite fruit?
3. Where are you living now, and is it good?
4. Were there any subjects at school that you just couldn't stand?
5. Heeeere ducky ducky ducky... piece of bread?

1. First of all, how's your head feeling?
2. Any idea who, if anybody, you're going to vote for in the election?
3. Can you cook? If so, what do you do well?
4. How exactly does one discover a severe onion allergy?
5. Read any good books recently?

1. First of all, how's your head feeling?

My head is feeling fuzzy and not working at the moment, but that is probabaly due to the immense amount of fermented potato juice I consumed last night and the fermented apple juice I consumed this morning. As to other times, I don't know because my head is fuzzy...(see earlier answer, ask when not hung over)

2. Any idea who, if anybody, you're going to vote for in the election?

I am irked by the fact that there is no R.O.N. option in British elections as at the moment I wish to register my disinterest to vote. However as this is not possible, I shall be voting either Tory or Liberal (dependant on opinion and MORI) on the simple premise that I want to try and prevent N.L. from getting in again. Remember if Blair wins this election, he'll be Britain's longest serving P.M.

3. Can you cook? If so, what do you do well?

I can cook extrememly well, indeed I have to, considering my allergies prevent any form of eating out generally. My Polish food is good, as is my bastardised Chinese (no onions, spring onions and shallots) and I partcularly enjoy experimentation, such as the turning of the remains of a roast leg of lamb into a perfectly nice Persian curry...mmmm...horst...

4. How exactly does one discover a severe onion allergy?

Through baby food and being hospitalised for two months afterwards whilst they shoved stuff into me to see what tried to kill me.

5. Read any good books recently?

Nothing I havn't read before, although Early Modern European Society (H. Kamen) and Learning Python (author can't remember) are currently occupying my attention.

Currently.

Hah! You get the (possibly) difficult questions.

1. Have you been round Scotland much? What were your favourite places?
2. Were you ever particularly religious? Did you go to church as a child?
3. What job would you most like to have? (Ignoring such irrelevancies as qualifications, competency, etc...)
4. Did you have any silly hobbies as a child? Especially embarassing ones... mwahahahahaha!
5. Chocolate: milk, dark, or white? Plain, nutty, praline, or boozy? *Innocent expression*

Hmmm... I think I asked you five before now... many apologies if I repeat any!

1. What do you mean by 'limited government libertarianism' in your LJ interests?
2. Have you a family, or are you an EVIL ALIEN SPY?
3. What horrible lurgies have you had?
4. Google tells me that the name xquiq means 'blood' and is from a Mayan legend. Why did you choose this as a username?
5. Have you got green fingers? (May be related to question 2...?)   8^)

Right. Sorry for the delay.

1. Let's start with a nosey one: have you ever taken any recreational drugs at all? If not, was this a conscious, definite decision?
2. If you were a polygon, what sort of polygon would you be? (Yay random!)
3. IIRC, you're part Indian-Jamaican-sort-of-thing (pardon the vagueness of memory). Tell me about that part of your family.
4. Favourite three comic strips?
5. Have you always had similar spiritual beliefs to those you have now?

From: [identity profile] luckylove.livejournal.com

1. Now I would never knowingly take any sort of recreational drugs. I've seen the mildest stuff cause too much heartache. I did eat a cannabis enhanced flapjack once but nothing happened. I also managed to get slightly stoned by second hand smoke. That was interesting. I cycled home afterwards, that was fun.
2. I think I'm a Heptagon. I like the number Seven. Seven of Nine is hot! Guess who's watching Voyager right now!
3. My Mum is Jamaican and my Dad was Scottish. Mum was born in Kingston, Jamaica but her parents moved to London when she was 10. She lived there until 1979 when she was pregnant with me and moved to Scotland. My Mum's great great . . . grandparents moved to Jamaica from what is now Pakistan (it was still India then.) On my Papa's side the family was from Persia (the Persian royal family in fact. I'm a Persian Princess!!!) My Nana's side of the family were from Nepal.
My Dad was born in London but the family is Scottish. My grandfather was from Aberdeen and my grandmotber was born in Glasgow. Her family were from Wales.
I'm a real mixture.
4. Ctrl Alt Del, Nemi, Calvin and Hobbes.
5. I wsa brought up as a Jehovah's Witness and believed in that very strongly. I do remember having doubts but that just made me try to believe stronger. When I was about 15 my family drifted away from the JWs and I was left with almost nothing. I still believed in most of their teachings but was having doubts about some others. The blood transfusion issue for one. I eventually started making up my own mind on this and many other issues. I'm not entirely sure how I got into the craft. I think it was when my Mum gave me a Carnelian tumblestone. I started collecting minerals and looking up their metaphysical properties. It just started making sense. Then I met Eleanor in the Silver Unicorn. I got talking to her and the discussion eventually moved to the craft. Everything just seemed to fall into place. I guess I'd been looking for it all my life. What I really like is the respect for all living creatures, acceptance of all people as long as they don't hurt others. What I grew to dislike about the JW's was the way they hated homosexuals and other people like that. When I was younger I bought into their beliefs but as I grew older I started thinking for myself. I'm so glad I grew up. Imagine not being friends with [livejournal.com profile] scunthorpe!!!

I think that's everything. Are you happy?
