Saw Tokyo Godfathers yesterday. The plot was somewhat unembarassedly cheesy, lining up one coincidence after another to advance itself, but the characters were genius. Directed (and written) by Satoshi Kon, who you might know from Perfect Blue (a film I still have to see) and the series Paranoia Agent. Satoshi shows how each of the main characters is reflected in another, and in other characters they run into, and uses this as a catalyst for soul-searching and self-discovery. Also putting it into my good books is the art, which, similar to Paranoia Agent, uses a bravely realistic warts-and-all style.

It impressed me, too.. When I saw that it was a Kon Satoshi film I was a bit "Uh-Oh..", as although I liked Perfect Blue I'd been put off him a bit by Paranoia Agent. >_>; The coincidences were hokey at times, yes, but I agree with you that the main strength of the film was the main characters. ^^

I liked the art style as well; it was similar to PA, but the character desgins in PA had a tendency to veer off of 'bravely realistic' and into 'grotesque for the heck of it'. X( Godfathers' art got it just right. :)
