"The Levellers were a mid 17th century English political party, who came to prominence during the English Civil Wars. Their manifesto involved a remodelling of the English political process along the lines of a more egalitarian, less class-driven regime. They had a large following within the ranks of the New Model Army."

D'oh!

(Pub quiz question: name shared by rock band and civil-war-era army. I said 'The Levellers' because I thought that they had their own army, but apparently not. Well, at least I got the time period right. Evil question. Evil evil evil.)

Will get back to (appropriate) studying now.

"'Gainst Lawyers and the Priests, stand up now, stand up now,
'Gainst Lawyers and the Priests stand up now,
For Tyrants they are both, even flat against their oath,
to grant us they are loth, free meat and drink and cloth,
        stand up now Diggers all..."

The Diggers were a completely different bunch from the Levellers, but often styled themselves "True Levellers". The Diggers wanted to reform society into a christian and agrarian socialist state, while the Levellers wanted fairly hefty liberal reforms: suffrage for all adult males, periodic elections, trial by jury, freedom of religion, end to censorship, economic reforms, and the abolishment of the monarchy and lords.

Yes, but I don't know any Leveller songs.

Kind of a shame about Noll Cromwell and then the Restoration, really...

(Interesting thing, unrelated except by approximate date: A guy who worked for the Royal Dockyards launched a catamaran yacht soon after the restoration, and everyone (including the commissioners of the navy) agreed that yes, this was fast and stable and so forth. 350 years later, the Royal Navy is launching its first multihull warships. I think there's a lesson in there somewhere.)

They meant Cromwell's New Model Army didn't they? First ever professional English army and the first force to wear read coats.
