According to the Jobcentre, I can't claim benefit until get a national insurance number.
According to the national insurance people, I can't get a national insurance number until I get a job.
Thus, I cannot claim benefit until I get a job. How extremely useful.

On challenging this logic, I discovered that I can actually get a NI number if I bring in a selection of rejection letters, to "prove" that I am looking for a job. Time to start sending in CVs by snail mail, then.

Weird. I got sent one on a card when I was like 16...

I always assumed that everyone got one...

Wasn't in the UK at that age. I only arrived here to attend uni.

I am a british citizen, and I can prove that I live here. Apparently that's not enough...   >8^P

would give you a rejection letter if i could, but don't want to *hug* =0)

surely there must be another way around it? I can't believe they wont give you a number!

What happens if you apply and get a job and you need your NI number right away???

Most applications demand it! Dodgy business.

Why thank you!   8^D

Well, the guy I spoke to today claimed that it isn't actually neccessary. Okay, he knows that, and now I know that, but do they know that?

They should be happy with a printed out copy of an official rejection email - the "We've hired someone for that already" kind. Not entirely useful, but it should let them sort out an NI number faster.

Aye... if any companies would even consider my application worthy of a reply!   >8^(

Actually, I've got a 'you are being considered' reply, which might help.

It would be nice to just get something saying "We've recieved your application", wouldn't it?

It would make me less of a goon, anyway. I get the impression they're too busy laughing to bother replying at times...

Apparently my C.V. will also help. Guess I'm off to the labs to print stuff up...

I could give you a temporary NI number. Are you dead? Oh wait, forget I spoke....

Seriously though, if they ask for an NI no. tell the its TN (Your birthday) (last letter of your last name). This is the official format for temporary NI numbers. See if they cotton. If they don't, claim their job.
