I went into teh art shop last week, asking "Ummm... do you have a drawing board? Maybe with one of those sliding ruler thingies?" (I'm a geek; I need the ruler, otherwise it isn't a proper drawing board!). Turns out that prices start at 48 quid, and that's only for an A3 sized one! Ouch! I beat a hasty retreat, and started thinking...

  • Big MDF board from Homebase: 7 quid
  • Meter rule from art shop: 3 quid
  • Butt hinges (hehehe... hehehe...): 99p
  • Half a dozen good screws (hehehe): 49p
  • A few pairs of nice pins (okay, this is getting silly): 49p

Plus a few new saws, a rasp and file, and a big shiny toolbox, but I'm not counting those, since they're handy to have around anyway.

A lot of sweat and sawdust later, I have a drawing board large enough to fit an A2 sheet of paper on either horizontally or vertically, with a flip-out stand that raises it to a comfortable angle. Huzzah!

From the frontThe bottom, with butt hinges.

By the way, is it just me, or is there something strangely flattering to a man's ego to be walking through town carrying a hefty load of construction material?   8^)

I am exceedingly impressed. I wish to see it in person!
...which I shall, this evening, as I am coming over. Mwhahahaha.

One thing: are they really called butt hinges? And if so, why?

Yep! A butt hinge is the more familiar kind of hinge, which you would use to attach windows and the like. I dunno why 'butt'; perhaps because the attached pieces 'butt up' against each other?

The other sort of hinge I saw was a 'flush hinge' (only funny in combination with 'butt hinge'). See more types here.

Now, wasn't that educational?

OOooo, I feel educated! Thank you!

But could you give me another allusion, as the windows don't mean much to me. All the windows I have ever had in my rooms always sliiddddeee up and down in grooves.

Oh dear. Window fixtures, hinges.. so many double-meanings. So little time.

w00t! Kudos on the hard work; you can do it, when you B a-.... Homebase it! XD

Oooh. Nice. Proper drawing boards are indeed horribly expensive. I usually use random big bits of hardboard and prop them up against things, but this is a much more professional-looking solution. I may have to steal it :)

You could sell them to art students for, oooh, say £25 or so each...

Hmmm... with that sort of profit, I could buy meself a jigsaw (the tool, not the puzzle), with which I could run them off much faster... escalating profits! Cottage industry! Yay capitalism!   8^)
