Bad news: the owner of Electric Cabaret was charged with "selling obscene material aggravated by religious prejudice", after selling an undercover policeman a Cradle of Filth T-shirt. (T-shirt in article, somewhat NSFW). He's now planning to leave Edinburgh and sail to Portugal. I don't know if the latter fact is a direct consequence of the former, though.

Good news: Plaisir du Chocolat is going to reopen! In the new town, though, this time.

Stupid news: Dubya on Gen. Musharraf: '"My mesage was … You can't be the president and the head of the military at the same time," Mr Bush said.'
Ping On restaurant, Stockbridge.

Not the cheapest, but damn worth it. They just keep bringing the food, and it is all fantastic. And authentic. Go for the set banquet.

Am absolutely stuffed.

Went to the farmers' market yesterday. Where I had pig in a bun. I like pig in a bun. Unfortunately pig in a bun doesn't like me...

Today, went to Mela in Pilrig park. Had my first taste of a Masala Dosa, which was luvverly, as well as Masala Chai (similarly luvverly). Culinarily, then, definitely a success.

[livejournal.com profile] galaxy_girl00 makes the most fantastic Daal. We were looking for Tarka Daal recipes online in order to try to recreate the excellent Khushi's version. What we ended up with wasn't quite Tarka Daal, since it contained no fried stuffs, but was nonetheless fantastic, and probably quite healthy too. It was meant to be a starter, but it was so filling that we didn't bother with the main course!

Can't find the recipe ATM; I remember that it contained Madras curry powder, split red lentils, water, half an onion, a squirt of garlic and a splodge of cream.

Went to a "Cheesy Cheese & Wine party" yesterday, which proved to be only slightly cheesy, and not at all whiny.

Lots about cheese )

All in all, had a great time, and for once my stomach behaved incredibly well despite the (apparently) threatening concept of visiting previously unknown flats for partying purposes. As well as the cheese, I managed to consume a significant amount of alcohol (wine, port, sock, rasperry vodka...) and by the end of the night was talking quite a bit of shite. Hurrah!

This recipe is gorgeous. I shall duplicate it here, so that I don't lose it.

Crunchy sesame chicken )

It went very well with my patented Nice Rice. While I'm on a roll:

I now have a lot of sesame seeds. What shall I do with them?   8^S

Eggs. Broken and beaten.

Ham. Tightly bound from tip to toe.

Cream. Whipped until its peaks are firm and erect.

This is not just food, this is S&M food.

This week, I have mainly been eating this. It's tasty — you can almost forget that it's technically muesli. And it turns the milk purple.   8^)

Before he puts lamprey on his menu, Bennett would also like some advice on the best way to kill these fish. "I tried to stun them, like you usually do a fish. I put a knife into their head. Nothing seemed to work," he said. "It was terrible."

Lamprey: A taste treat from prehistory?

Tired of hearing macho idiots boast about whose chilli sauce is the hottest? Buy a vial of pure capsaicin crystals. It's as hot as you can get, and that's final.

Also, read about it on the Hot Sauce Blog.

Have just been eating Vacherin Mont D'or, brought back from Swizzerland.

It is the durian of the cheese world. Smelly as anything, but actually quite tasty!

Random fact: Vacherin is banned in America. For no good reason.   8^)

The sky is absolutely lovely right now. I'm sitting in Appleton level 5 labs[0], and the sun's lighting up the underside of all the clouds a firey orange as it sets. An artist's palette of blue, orange and gray in the sky. It makes me happy.

Synod proceedings )

Synod ended at around half-twelve. I briefly considered proceeding to Mission, but decided I lacked the caffiene to get there while still awake. I may instead go to Neon today. I shall remember my earplugs this time. It is on today, correct? Anyone else going?

Karate was fun today; a smaller class than usual, which meant we got through stuff faster. Continuing on from Friday, more simple combination attacks/defences were studied. I particularly like "punch, reverse punch, roundhouse kick" as an attack. Must however practice my triple-punch combo, as I always seem to start with either the wrong hand or the wrong foot.

Oh, and [livejournal.com profile] deralte; further to our conversation about straightening the back leg: I asked the teacher about this (over a pint), and he replied that a straight back leg was indeed sub-optimal in the long run. He teaches the beginners the straight-back-leg posture in order to learn 'correct form', but this form should become less strict and more dynamic as the student progresses to higher belts. Oh, and one of the sequences we studied today did in fact include a kick to the uke's[2] front leg.

Lastly: I keep forgetting to spam on behalf of Zoga. 'Tis a middle-eastern sandwich & wrap café on S. Clerk street, opposite Lidl. £2 for a feta and salad wrap which is both large and very very tasty! Friendly people too. Next time you need a sammitch, try them.

...playing with chocolate.

Am off to a dance thingy this evening; it includes pot luck food, and I said I'd bring 'some sort of dessert'. I settled on chocolate cornflake clusters, since I remember my mother making them without too much difficulty.

Have discovered the art of tempering chocolate; if you heat chocolate too fast, it will set with a layer of dusty white fat on the outside, which is most unpleasant. So it needs to be tempered while heating to avoid this. The method I discovered online involves putting the chocolate in the microwave for 30 seconds, allowing it to cool to body temperature, and then repeating as neccessary.

The preperation of the clusters went without too much difficulty. For safety's sake, of course, I made sure to taste the mixture at many points in the process. Anyway, these are messy to make. There's pretty much no way to create the clusters without getting chocolate and cornflakes all over your hands. Yay!

Cornflake clusters are setting in the fridge right now. Mmmm, tasty.

Update: well, the bad news is that I wasn't the only one to think of chocolate-covered cornflakes. The good news is that mine were easily the superior ones. (I took a vote.)   8^)

...are good! Teeth were made for rending and tearing (well, some are, at least), and they were put to good use yesterday on burgers, steak (very nice), sossinges and ribs. Oueh[0], barbeques are indeed events which should occur more often.

However, am feeling a touch fragile at the moment. Can't quite recall how much wine was had last night, but I had a bottle, [livejournal.com profile] scattergather had one, [livejournal.com profile] gominokouhai and [livejournal.com profile] stormsearch had two or three between them... then [livejournal.com profile] figg turned up later, and I'm vaguely aware of two more bottles being produced. There was probably some polish being drunk as well... at least, the bottle is now empty, so somebody must have drunk it. Urgh. Head still feels like it's floating slightly, not quite in the right place...

[livejournal.com profile] scattergather hasn't emerged from his room yet. I recall the last thing he said^Wmumbled last night was "never let me drink wine again". And [livejournal.com profile] gominokouhai has to work today, and was up until morning with [livejournal.com profile] figg drunkedly singing Divine Comedy songs. Hmmmm. 8^P
